The Big Misconception

The Big Misconception

I am forever amazed at the mentality people have where they truly believe that the places they frequent simply would never become a target of attack. They think to themselves, “I’m going to the barber, or I’m going to Goodyear to get an oil change. What criminal would ever attack these places?” Reality paints a much different picture. You see, these people try to justify to themselves that it would never happen at the florist or the pet supply store because they think that the criminal operates with a rational mind. “A rational mind would not attack a barber shop, they would attack a bank or a jewelry store. Right?” Nothing could be further from the truth and that is why people become victims every single day. And that is why those of us that are prepared and understand the reality that is all around us actually have a chance.

Two trained, concealed handgun permit holders stopped an attack at Schlenker Automotive repair shop at 4:30 PM on the Friday after Thanksgiving. This is a privately owned mom & pop auto repair shop in Florida. The attacker, Robert Bailey, was armed with a .45-caliber handgun and “multiple magazines” and killed one person and severely wounded another in the business’ parking lot. Bailey continued shooting inside the shop until he was stopped by two law abiding concealed weapon holders. These attacks happen every single day, but what we never hear about is how many attacks are stopped by trained and prepared concealed weapon holders. Gun Owners of America states that: “Of the 2.5 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8 percent of the time, a citizen kills or wounds his/her attacker.” Now I am not advocating the practice of warning shots or brandishing – that is for another discussion. What I am saying is, how many lives were saved those 2.5 million times a year? I would think millions, and you won’t hear about these in the media either; it flies in the face of their agenda.

It is impossible to predict crime, just like it is impossible to predict car accidents and fire, yet we still always wear our seat belts and keep a fire extinguisher. Get yourself a firearm and master its use, and take it with you wherever you go. Don’t kid yourself into thinking a thug is not going hit the florist you are headed to today, because they do.

Be Safe,

Joe Shahoud
